First Fruit’s Field Trip That Sparks Vision in Potomac Gardens”

Sometimes the most powerful stories in our community aren’t the ones told on big stages or documented in shiny headlines. They’re the ones shared among friends, in living rooms, on stoops, or during quiet moments when you can feel the sincerity behind every word. This is one of those stories — a story about Brother Frank Muhammad, CEO of First Fruit, and the work he continues to pour into the young men of Potomac Gardens in Washington, D.C.

If you’ve ever met Brother Frank, you know he doesn’t walk around beating his chest or pretending he’s doing it alone. In fact, he says the opposite. He humbly shares,

“I only stand a chance of helping these YG’s(Young-gods) stay on a course of perpetual growth and development because I got a whole lot of people who help me stay on that same course. I’m just smart enough to recognize that the smartest thing you can do is continuously put them in front of those who are ahead of you in certain regards.”

That honesty… that humility… that’s what makes his work so impactful. In Potomac Gardens, Brother Frank has built a network of Black men with skills — real skills — and the heart to give them away. Electricians, plumbers, tradesmen of every kind, and yes, those whose mastery is in business, economics, and wealth-building. He understands something too many overlook: a community cannot be rebuilt on inspiration alone. It requires knowledge, craftsmanship, discipline, and men willing to show the next generation how to do more than survive — how to create.

One of the brothers he connected with is Coach Kevin 2X, who brings his expertise in business development, wealth creation, and self-employment. When young men see Black men who look like them talk about LLCs, ownership, discipline, and building something from the ground up, it plants a seed. A seed that says: “You can do this too.”

Brother Frank also brought the youth to meet Brother Greg, of TRU-EPOXY, during a field trip to his warehouse and training center in Baltimore. If you ever want to witness a blueprint for success, you need to step inside that building. At 3130 Frederick Ave, TRU-EPOXY teaches profitable flooring and installation skills — the kind of trade that never stops being needed. But what makes the school stand out is that it’s not just about hands-on skills. They also teach marketing, sales, lead generation, bidding for contracts, pricing services, and building a brand. In other words, they teach ownership.

Brother Greg breaks it down to the youth in a way they can understand. In our community some hustlers destroy the community, but righteous hustlers build it. They create, they grow, they inspire. And our young men need more righteous hustlers — men who see opportunity not as an escape route, but as a way to lift others up with them.

Another brother on deck that day was Brother Barrington X, who came with his son to experience the trip firsthand.

Brother Frank said, “My Godbrother Barrington X spent time with his son and exposed him to entrepreneurship at an early age. Now imagine what can happen when our young men internalize and integrate both concepts.”

There’s something powerful about a father and son in the same room, learning the same lessons, getting exposed to the same opportunities. It tells the young men who don’t have fathers present that brotherhood still steps in. This is how communities are rebuilt — not from the outside, but from within.

And this is why Brother Frank’s First Fruit program continues to stand out in Potomac Gardens. It’s not charity. It’s not a photo-op. It’s not a temporary solution. It’s a system. A blueprint. A living example of what happens when skilled Black men come together to lift the next generation higher than they themselves were lifted.

Alongside Brother Kevin, Brother Greg, Brother Barrington, and Brother Chuck Muhammad from the Community Super Friends, the foundation is being laid for something bigger than any single program. It’s a movement.

And now the call is simple:

If you have a business, a trade, or a company — consider creating an internship for a young man.If you’re able to support, partner, or volunteer — reach out.If you’re near Potomac Gardens — connect with the work already happening on the ground.

Brother Frank isn’t just mentoring these young men; he is showing them what fatherhood, leadership, and responsibility look like in real time. And he’s proving that when we connect our skills, our networks, and our hearts, the next generation doesn’t just get hope — they get a future.
