Join Us in the Spirit of Fasting: A Ramadan Invitation to Our Christian Brothers and Sister

Writer: Brother Levon XBrother Levon X

Would Jesus join the Muslim world during Ramadan?

Jesus, central to Christian faith, is known for His profound spiritual practices, including fasting. According to the Bible, after His baptism, Jesus fasted for forty days and forty nights in the wilderness to prepare for His ministry (Matthew 4:2). This act of devotion highlights the significance of fasting as a means to seek closeness to God, exercise self-discipline, and resist temptation.

In Islam, fasting during the holy month of Ramadan is a fundamental practice. Muslims fast from dawn until sunset for approximately 30 days, commemorating the first revelation of the Quran to Prophet Muhammad.(Pbuh). This period is dedicated to spiritual reflection, increased devotion, and self-control.

The parallels between Jesus’ forty-day fast and the observance of Ramadan are evident. Both traditions emphasize fasting as a path to spiritual growth and a deeper connection with God. While Jesus did not specifically observe Ramadan, as it was established after His time, His teachings and actions regarding fasting align with the principles Muslims uphold during this holy month.

Moreover, Jesus provided guidance on the attitude one should maintain while fasting. He taught that fasting should be a sincere act between an individual and God, not performed for public recognition:

“When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do… But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting…” (Matthew 6:16-18)

This teaching underscores the importance of humility and sincerity in one’s spiritual practices, a sentiment echoed in the observance of Ramadan.

Fasting, as demonstrated by Jesus, serves multiple purposes:

Spiritual Strength: It fosters reliance on God and fortifies one’s faith.

Self-Discipline: Abstaining from physical needs helps in developing control over desires and impulses.

Empathy and Compassion: Experiencing hunger encourages empathy towards those who are less fortunate, promoting acts of charity.

In essence, while Jesus did not partake in Ramadan, His practices and teachings on fasting resonate with the core values of this Islamic observance. His example serves as a bridge, highlighting shared values between Christianity and Islam, and emphasizing the universal importance of fasting as a means to grow closer to God and cultivate personal virtue.

As the holy month of Ramadan begins on the evening of February 28, 2025, we warmly invite our Christian brothers and sisters to join us in this special time of fasting, prayer, and reflection. Ramadan is a month when Muslims around the world fast from dawn until sunset, seeking to grow closer to God and strengthen our self-discipline.

How We Fast During Ramadan

Each day of Ramadan, we begin our fast with a pre-dawn meal called suhoor and break our fast at sunset with a meal known as iftar. Fasting involves abstaining from food and drink during daylight hours, which helps us develop empathy for those in need and encourages self-control. Beyond fasting, Ramadan is a time for increased prayer, reading of the Quran, and coming together as a community.

Ramadan is expected to begin on the evening of Friday, February 28, 2025, and conclude on Sunday, March 30, 2025.

During Ramadan, Muslims observe five daily prayers at specific times:

1. Fajr (pre-dawn): Begins at 5:28 AM.

2. Dhuhr (midday): Begins at 12:21 PM.

3. Asr (afternoon): Begins at 3:32 PM.

4. Maghrib (sunset): Begins at 6:01 PM.

5. Isha (night): Begins at 7:14 PM.

The Benefits of Fasting

Fasting offers numerous benefits. It helps purify the soul, build self-discipline, and foster compassion. Research indicates that fasting can improve blood sugar control, reduce inflammation, and promote heart health. Spiritually, it allows us to step back from daily distractions and focus on our relationship with God.

An Invitation to Join Us

In the spirit of unity and understanding, we invite our Christian friends to share in the blessings of Ramadan. Here are some ways to participate:

Join Us for Iftar: Experience the joy of breaking the fast at sunset by attending community iftar gatherings. These meals are a time of fellowship and gratitude, and your presence would make them even more special.

Reflect and Pray Together: Consider setting aside time for personal reflection and prayer during this month, drawing inspiration from the fasting traditions in both of our faiths.

Partner in Acts of Charity: Ramadan emphasizes helping those in need. Working together in charitable activities can strengthen our bonds and make a positive impact on our community.

We hope that by coming together during Ramadan, we can deepen our understanding of each other’s traditions and foster a spirit of harmony and love.

Warm regards.
