The Honorable Elijah Muhammad

On October 7th, we celebrate the birth anniversary of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad, a significant icon whose impact on the lives of Black men and women in America still resonates deeply today.

The Honorable Elijah Muhammad's life and legacy demonstrate the transformative power of knowledge, faith, and vision. Despite having only a 4th-grade formal education, he was mentored and taught by Master Fard Muhammad for 3 1/2 years, who imparted a body of knowledge that sparked a movement and reshaped the consciousness of millions.

MUI Chicago

One of Elijah Muhammad's early and crucial tasks was establishing a school system known as Muhammad University Of Islam (MUI) to cultivate an independent mindset among his followers. Elijah Muhammad Recognized that true liberation required education outside a system that distorted or erased their true identity. The schools he founded aimed to teach academic skills and awaken students to a sense of self, purpose, and cultural pride. Through this educational blueprint, he sought to nurture a new generation that would be mentally, spiritually, and economically empowered to build their own nation.

This was not just an academic pursuit but a revolutionary act of self-determination. By creating a school system rooted in the values of knowledge, discipline, and self-respect, Elijah Muhammad laid the foundation for the development of an independent nation—a community that would no longer be subjected to false narratives and oppressive teachings of a "wicked system" that sought to keep them ignorant of their true identity and potential.

His teachings transformed black lives and established institutions that fostered economic independence, self-sufficiency, and a collective sense of purpose. Through the programs and businesses of the Nation of Islam, he provided a model for building and sustaining a community that could stand on its own, reflecting his belief that education was the cornerstone of freedom and self-reliance.

The work of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad was revolutionary in transforming the lives of countless Black men and women. Through his teachings, he provided a path for people to overcome destructive behaviors such as alcoholism, drug addiction, prostitution, and other harmful lifestyles perpetuated by systemic oppression and poverty. His message offered a sense of identity, purpose, and self-respect that many had never experienced before.

The transformation he facilitated was not just a change in habits but a complete reformation of the mind and spirit. By instilling principles of self-discipline, self-knowledge, and the value of hard work, he elevated individuals from a state of degradation to one of dignity, power, and divine potential, helping them see themselves as gods capable of greatness.

Elijah Muhammad emphasized that Black men and women were not created to be victims of vice and crime but rather to be the builders and sustainers of civilization. His teachings laid the foundation for restoring self-worth and reshaping the community by turning what society deemed as "Negroes" into conscious, productive individuals who saw themselves as a reflection of God.

This transformation went beyond personal redemption; it served as a model of what is possible when people embrace their true identity and commit to principles of righteousness, self-love, and empowerment. The Honorable Elijah Muhammad's success in transforming lives is a testament to the power of faith, discipline, and a clear vision for collective upliftment.

The Muhammad Speaks newspaper, created by The Honorable Elijah Muhammad, was a pioneering accomplishment in media independence and a crucial tool in spreading his message. It served as a powerful platform to educate, inform, and uplift the Black community, while also countering the negative narratives often portrayed in mainstream media.

The Final Call Newspaper, revived and rebuilt by the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan, continues this legacy today. It remains one of the most significant independent Black-owned media outlets, providing a voice for truth, justice, and the teachings of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad. The Final Call not only shares news and information but also addresses the critical issues affecting the community—from social justice and economic empowerment to health and spiritual guidance.

This platform has become a beacon of independent thought and media ownership, embodying the principle of "doing for self." By maintaining editorial independence and focusing on content that uplifts and educates, it serves as a modern-day example of self-determination. The paper continues to inspire individuals and communities to think critically, act responsibly, and work collectively towards a better future. It shows the power of controlling our own narrative and using media as a tool for empowerment.
