“Unreplaceable: Why Trades Will Survive A.I. and Build Our Future”

ree

We are living in an era where artificial intelligence is rapidly advancing and reshaping industries. Technology is evolving faster than ever, and many fear their jobs will be replaced by automation. The concern is real. A.I. is powerful, and if used responsibly, it can be a beautiful tool that helps us work smarter, not harder. But we must also acknowledge a truth that often gets overlooked: A.I. cannot replace skilled hands. It cannot fix a broken pipe, wire a building, install an electrical panel, or plant a crop. Skilled trades will always be necessary.

Many young people are pushed toward college, often without being informed of the cost—emotionally, financially, and mentally. We honor and respect those who choose the college path. We need doctors, lawyers, teachers, dentists, accountants, and professionals whose careers require degrees. But we must also recognize the value of trades. These careers build the world, maintain the world, and feed the world. Trades offer immediate income, financial independence, business ownership, and global job mobility without the burden of overwhelming student debt.

Carpenters build and repair homes and businesses. Architects take visions and turn them into real structures, just as painters turn blank canvases into art. Engineers create systems that keep our communities functioning. Plumbers ensure safe, healthy living environments by managing water and pipe systems. Electricians keep the lights on and the power flowing. These professions are not just jobs—they are lifelines that keep society running. A person skilled in a trade is never without value.

I remember an experience with my friend Frank, an electrician. We stopped by a mom-and-pop soul food restaurant, owned by a woman who knew both of us from the neighborhood. She was stressed—her ice cream machine had broken in the middle of the summer, and it was a major source of her income. Frank offered to take a look. Within twenty minutes, he diagnosed the problem and repaired the machine.

He could have charged the full electrician rate, but he simply said, “Give me $100 and we’re good.” In twenty minutes, he earned what someone making $25 an hour earns in four hours. That moment demonstrated the power of having a skill—when you can solve problems that people desperately need solved, you will always be valuable.

That principle applies across trades. Mechanics are in high demand because cars are now computers on wheels. A mechanic who understands technology and engines has a powerful combination of skills that can lead to a profitable business or reliable income anywhere. Agriculture is another essential trade. If you understand how to grow food, you possess a skill that never loses value. In a world where food prices rise and land becomes more precious, growing food is not only a trade—it is wealth.

Personal trainers also thrive in today’s market, where people want better health and guidance. If you understand anatomy, motivation, and wellness, you can build a client base, a brand, and a living.

Success in a trade is not just about learning how to do the work. It is about learning the business behind the work. Certifications, proper licensing, an LLC, and insurance turn your skill into a business. Once you learn both the trade and the business of the trade, you can maximize your income and create true independence. That’s where financial freedom begins. When you understand how to operate as a business, you qualify for tax write-offs, deductions, and financial benefits that regular employees never see.

In the age of A.I., your hands are your security. Your skills are your insurance policy. If college does not feel like the right fit, that does not mean failure. It means you are meant for a different path—one that leads to independence, ownership, and control over your own future. The world will always need people who know how to build, repair, grow, and create.

Do not let fear stop you. Let it motivate you. Your ability to produce something that people need makes you recession-proof, A.I.-proof, and economically powerful. You do not have to wait for permission. You do not have to beg for a job. Learn your craft. Own your business. Control your future. Your hands are powerful. Use them to build the life you deserve.
