Malcolm X’s quote, “The media’s the most powerful entity on earth. They have the power to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty innocent, and that’s power. Because they control the minds of the masses,” encapsulates the immense influence that media has on shaping public perception and societal outcomes. Brother Malcolms words reflect a deep understanding of how media can be used as both a tool of manipulation and a source of empowerment, depending on who controls it and how it is wielded.
How many are familiar with COINTELPRO and how the media has wielded its influence to undermine prominent Black figures and organizations that seek to uplift the Black community? One of the primary tactics employed by these organizations has been manipulating character assassination, often carried out through media narratives.
COINTELPRO, or Counter Intelligence Program, was a covert operation initiated by the FBI under J. Edgar Hoover. Its primary goal was to surveil, infiltrate, and disrupt groups perceived as "threats to U.S. interests". Among its targets were Black civil rights organizations, including the Black Panther Party, The Nation of Islam, and Martin Luther King Jr.'s Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC).
One of the key strategies used against Dr. Martin Luther King was an effort to undermine his moral authority. The FBI sent anonymous letters that threatened to reveal alleged personal indiscretions, pressuring him to step down They also spread damaging rumors about his associations, attempting to label him a communist sympathizer.
Additionally, COINTELPRO sought to heighten tensions between Malcolm X and The Honorable Elijah Muhammad, which ultimately led to divisions within the Nation of Islam. The media often depicted Malcolm X as an extremist, aiming to alienate him from mainstream supporters.
Prominent figures like Huey Newton, Eldridge Cleaver, and Fred Hampton were similarly portrayed as violent radicals. COINTELPRO went so far as to
allegedly forge documents and plant false stories, presenting them as criminals or provocateurs of violence.
The similarities between historical disinformation campaigns like COINTELPRO and today’s social media show a common issue: using media to control stories and block movements for justice. Although the tools we use have changed, the goals are still the same—undermining progress, discrediting leaders, and creating divisions within communities fighting for change. COINTELPRO targeted Black organizations and leaders, which has led to lasting distrust. This highlights how propaganda can weaken community movements
The community must educate itself on historical awareness to recognize the tricks and manipulation involved, especially how mainstream media plays a role. Unfortunately, some individuals use their podcast platforms to echo the ignorance and misinformation perpetuated by mainstream media, prioritizing clickbait and viewership over truth.
So, what is the duty of genuine media? Is it to convey the truth, or what does justice honestly look like when misinformation is used to tarnish someone's reputation, mainly if they are innocent of any wrongdoing? We reside in a society where propaganda and misinformation have become newsworthy, akin to pigs flocking to slop—something we know holds no real value and is simply filthy.
Propaganda as "Newsworthy": Misinformation spreads quickly in the digital age, reinforcing harmful stereotypes and further obstructing the pursuit of truth and justice. This pressing reality highlights the dire need for enhanced media literacy and critical thinking skills within our community to combat the tide of false narratives.
Media coverage should emphasize fairness and equity, highlighting systemic injustices rather than unjustly scapegoating individuals or specific organizations. The media and podcasters have an inherent responsibility to hold itself accountable for the repercussions of its reporting. True journalism must actively protect those individuals of influence who strive to uplift their communities rather than contributing to their undermining through unfounded allegations.
Being Historically Studious allows our community to recognize manipulation patterns and resist repeating past mistakes. Educating younger generations about these tactics will build resilience and enhance critical thinking skills. It is imperative to question the sources of information encountered and insist upon credible, transparent journalism. The community must collectively refuse to propagate unverified or biased narratives.
