Why did God establish dietary laws? How did slavery impact the global black community?

While scripture, science, and food may stir controversy, they also have the power to unite us in a common goal: the pursuit of a healthier, more compassionate, and spiritually grounded life.

By engaging in open, respectful conversations, we can honor each person’s journey while encouraging thoughtful choices that benefit individuals and communities alike.

The historical impact of slavery on the Black community, particularly regarding the loss of knowledge of self and proper nutrition, is a profound and painful reality.

When examining the dietary habits that emerged during and after slavery, we can see how systemic oppression and deprivation disrupted ancestral traditions, including those rooted in spiritual and cultural practices such as the dietary laws observed by Israelites and Muslims.

Historical Disruption of Knowledge of Self

Slavery did more than uproot people physically; it sought to erase their identities, languages, cultures, and spiritual practices.

Many enslaved people from Africa came from cultures that adhered to strict dietary laws, such as avoiding pork or other unclean foods. These traditions were tied to religious beliefs (Islam, Judaism) or cultural norms.

Slaveholders imposed European diets and practices, stripping enslaved people of their autonomy over food and their connection to their ancestral customs.

Enslaved people were often given the scraps of food deemed unfit for their captors, such as pig intestines (which became chitterlings). Out of necessity, they created meals from what was available, leading to the development of soul food.

The transatlantic slave trade not only affected Black people in America but also disrupted communities across the globe:

Islamic Influence in West Africa: Many enslaved Africans were practicing Muslims, observing halal dietary laws. The forced abandonment of these practices contributed to a loss of cultural and spiritual identity.

Israelite Heritage: For those who identify as descendants of the Israelites, the dietary laws outlined in Leviticus were part of their spiritual covenant. Being severed from this knowledge added to the cultural disconnection.

Colonialism: In addition to slavery, colonialism imposed European diets and agricultural systems on African and Caribbean nations, leading to a shift away from traditional, plant-based diets.

The dietary laws in the Old Testament, like those found in Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14, were part of a larger covenant that called the Israelites to live holy lives, set apart from other nations. Following these laws was a form of obedience and reverence to God.

Many unclean animals, like pork and shellfish, are carriers of diseases or parasites that could harm the human body.

For example:

The Pig and its Nature:

Diet: Pigs are scavengers and will eat anything, including feces, decaying matter, garbage, and even the carcasses of other animals.

Digestive System: A pig’s digestive system is relatively short, meaning it does not fully filter out toxins from its food before those toxins enter its flesh.

Parasites and Diseases: Pigs often carry parasites like Trichinella spiralis (responsible for trichinosis), tapeworms, and other harmful organisms that are not fully eradicated even through thorough cooking.

Chitterlings (Pig Intestines)

Fecal Contamination: Chitterlings, being pig intestines, are directly exposed to feces, and no amount of cleaning can completely remove the residual waste.

Health Risks: Cooking may reduce some bacteria but cannot eliminate all potential health hazards, including parasites or toxins absorbed by the pig.

Health Implications of Pork Consumption

Parasites and Toxins: The parasites and toxins in pork can lead to a range of health issues, from foodborne illnesses to chronic conditions.

Inflammatory Effects: Studies have shown that consuming pork can contribute to inflammation in the body, which is linked to diseases like arthritis, heart disease, and obesity.

Long-Term Risks: Regular consumption of pork has been associated with increased risks of certain cancers, particularly colorectal cancer.

Shellfish: Can accumulate toxins from their environment, leading to health risks.

These laws likely served as a safeguard for the Israelites’ physical health.

Clean and unclean distinctions also symbolized purity, not just in diet but in lifestyle and worship. The dietary laws reminded the people to consider the sacredness of their choices and actions.

Scriptural teachings on diet, such as the dietary laws in Leviticus or Jesus’ teachings in the New Testament, are interpreted in various ways across religions and denominations.

Old Testament Laws some may view them as eternal moral guidelines Judaism or certain Christian sects).

In the New Testament Teachings others believe dietary restrictions were fulfilled in Christ and no longer apply (mainstream Christianity).

Jesus Fulfilled, Not Abolished the Law

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them” (Matthew 5:17).

Jesus never dismissed the wisdom behind the laws but highlighted their deeper spiritual purpose. While the ceremonial aspects of the law were fulfilled in Him, the moral and practical lessons—such as caring for our bodies—still hold value.

We must embrace the role of Scientists of Food and Agriculture in today's world. By studying what we consume, we empower ourselves to take charge of our health, discover how food influences our bodies, minds, and spirits, and make informed choices that will benefit future generations.

God entrusted humanity with stewardship over the earth (Genesis 1:26), which calls us to understand how to grow, prepare, and consume food in ways that honor both creation and our bodies.

Plant-Based Diets, A Modern Reflection of Wisdom

Foods like peas, broccoli, lentils, and leafy greens are powerhouses of amino acids, fiber, and essential nutrients. Embracing these vibrant foods nurtures physical health, enhances mental clarity, and elevates overall well-being. energy levels and clearer thinking.

Reclaiming Knowledge

The way forward involves recognizing our history while actively working to restore awareness of self and proper nutrition. It is important to teach the historical and cultural significance of traditional diets and the health benefits associated with them. We should encourage urban farming and community gardens to improve access to fresh, healthy foods.

Additionally, we must emphasize the dietary laws and principles found in religious texts to honor our ancestry and faith. Promoting plant-based diets and natural remedies can also be part of a holistic approach to health and wellness.

The consequences of deviation

Pharmaceutical companies have undoubtedly benefited from the widespread deviation from dietary principles that align with both spiritual wisdom and scientific research. The result is a reliance on medications to manage conditions that are often preventable through proper nutrition and lifestyle choices.

Pharmaceutical drugs often come with a range of side effects, leading to additional medications to counteract those effects. This creates a cycle of dependency.

The pharmaceutical industry profits from treating illnesses rather than preventing them, incentivizing a system that prioritizes medication over education about proper nutrition.

Pharmaceutical companies thrive on the health crises caused by poor dietary habits, but the power to change this lies within our hands.

By returning to dietary laws that are both scripturally grounded and scientifically validated, we can prevent many of the conditions that lead to pharmaceutical dependency.

When we embrace what is good and respecting the temple of our bodies, we not only enhance our personal lives but also inspire others to do the same. This is how we create a ripple effect of health, positivity, and gratitude that honors the abundance of life God has provided.
