Imagine being a parent and receiving the heartbreaking phone call that your child has been senselessly killed. No parent should ever have to endure such pain, yet this tragedy echoes so often in the Black community that it risks being normalized—a reality we must collectively reject.

On December 7, 2024, we mourned the loss of Brother Cornelius McDonald, a 33-year-old community leader and anti-gun violence advocate. On November 30, outside a Jasper's restaurant in Maryland, his life was tragically cut short by gun violence. His death left many in disbelief, as Brother Cornelius was the embodiment of what we encourage all young Black men and men in general to strive toward: active, positive leadership in their communities.

There is never a legitimate reason for violence to resolve a disagreement. Brother Cornelius served as the executive director of Stay Solid, a D.C.-based organization dedicated to assisting young adults with mental and behavioral health challenges. His tireless efforts to mentor youth and prevent gun violence made him a pillar of the community.

Though the police have apprehended the alleged assailant, the loss of Brother Cornelius weighs heavily. Black-on-Black violence continues to claim lives and break families. Cornelius’ mother, Mrs. Maria VB Butler, expressed her heartfelt gratitude on social media, appreciating the love shown for her son and encouraging the community to celebrate his life and the many contributions he made.

The end of Black-on-Black violence depends on us as a community. Violence is not an answer; it is a cowardly act that harms not only the victim but their family, friends, and community. Each senseless act destroys more than one life. Disputes must be resolved through dialogue and conflict resolution, not bullets.

This tragedy underscores the urgent need for conflict resolution centers nationwide, teaching young men how to handle disagreements without resorting to violence. Parents and friends: if you know someone struggling with anger or prone to violence, please seek help for them. Many of us know who the violent offenders in our communities are. Change begins when the community stands united and refuses to tolerate such acts.

A strong, solid community doesn’t shield those who commit heinous crimes. Instead, it works together to prevent violence and hold offenders accountable. When the community steps up and partners with fair and dedicated law enforcement, true justice can prevail.

Let us honor Brother Cornelius’ legacy by taking action to strengthen our communities, foster peace, and support one another in the fight against violence. Together, we can break the cycle and create a brighter future.

To all activists tirelessly working to uplift challenged urban communities, we extend our heartfelt prayers and gratitude for your resilience and the often thankless efforts you make to reach our young people. May tragedies such as this never discourage you or dim your resolve to stay focused on the vital mission of guiding and supporting our youth.

Your dedication is truly saving lives, and we pray that the challenges you face in your noble work are met with immense rewards—both from God and from the communities you serve. May you continue to inspire change, bring hope, and build a brighter future for the generations to come.
